Day 1: Launceston to Walls of Jerusalem
We transfer from Launceston to the Walls of Jerusalem National Park (travel time approx. 2 hours). We don our light weight backpacks and commence our walk with an uphill climb until the plateau of the National Park is reached. From here the walking is flat as we pass by numerous tarns and lakes enroute to our base camp for the next 3 nights. We set up camp, relax and enjoy the amazing surrounds of the dolerite peaks of the West Wall.
Day 2: Day Walk
Today we head out from our camp (carrying just our day packs) passing Lake Salome and the Pool of Bethesda before reaching the imposing dolerite Gate of Damascus. Passing through the Gate of Damascus takes us into a large stand of Pencil Pines known as Dixons Kingdom; open grass lands surround the historic Dixons Kingdom Hut. Dixons Kingdom Hut was built in the early 1930’s by Reg Dixon a trapper of the time. After a short break enjoying our lush green surrounds, we head off to climb Mount Jerusalem. On a clear day the views from Mt. Jerusalem stretch across the central highlands where it is now possible to understand why the area is also known as the “Land of a thousand Lakes”.
Day 3: Day Walk
Today is another fantastic day where we continue to explore this alpine paradise. We climb Kind Davids Peak and follow the ridge line along to Solomon’s Throne where we have an excellent view of the area we walked on the previous day. From here we head south and enjoy yet more of the lakes, forests and open grass lands that make this such a superb walking location. For the keen there are more opportunities to climb the surrounding peaks.
Day 4: Walls of Jerusalem to Launceston
Being our final day, we make the most of our morning by enjoying one last short but stunning walk to the top of Mt. Opheul. After lunch we commence our return walk and journey back to Launceston arriving around 5.00pm
