Cradle and West Walks - 6 days - Easy/Moderate
Cabin Based Day Walks at Cradle Mountain, Strahan and Lake St Clair…

Want to go somewhere really wild? Consider Tasmania's rugged side. Face the full force of the Roaring 40s that have blown in around half the world. Look west and know the next land is Patagonia in South America. Look south and shiver at the knowledge that Antarctica is just over the horizon. Travel amongst some of earth's oldest rocks and most adapted vegetation and fauna.
Start your trip at Cradle Mountain at the northern end of Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park. We attempt to summit precipitous Cradle Mountain and explore the glacially carved landscape home to numerous furry animals no longer prevalent anywhere else in the world.

After a couple of nights in highland cabins we make our way west into the distinctive quartz country characterized by jagged peaks, deep chasms, tannin stained streams and towering waterfalls. There are numerous short walks en route to the harbor village of Strahan on the West Coast. There we find opportunity to immerse ourselves in its renowned pining, whaling and penal history.

Be amazed by spectacular roads that wind through this stunning country as we journey to Lake St Clair in the center of Tasmania. Walk through magnificent cool temperate rainforest squeezed between deep dark waters and towering spires. Climb above the tree line to take in views of inaccessible South Western Tasmania.
Our return to Launceston passes through the land of 3000 lakes – all of them home to the wily trout.

We spend time at Liffy Falls as we descend out of the wild country back to the cultivated patchwork of rural Northern Tasmania.
